Again... is Nanotechnology Safe?

The debate on nanotechnology continues to rage. Scientists developing nanotechnology-based products will tell us that nano products are safe for consumers. Many skin care products, particularly those in the anti-aging arena, now rely on nanotechnology as a means of increasing the efficacy of formulations. Companies claim that nanotechnology has provided them with a new weapon in the fight against aging. But the fact that such come into such close contact with the body suggests that a great level of research is necessary to ensure safety.

Questions have been raised over how nano-based cosmetic formulations will behave once they are applied to the skin? For example; an anti-aging formula. Due to their size could such small particles penetrate the skin's inner layer? Could this lead to the particles entering the bloodstream? If so what might the implications be?

All of these need to be answered through scientific risk research that more and more scientists believe needs attention. Some scientists even believe that under current conditions determining the safety of such products is a lottery for consumers.

Author of the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies report, Andrew Maynard, believes that radical action has to take place in order to take the uncertainty out of the equation. Undoubtedly Maynard's suggestion makes many in the cosmetic industry uncomfortable. There is a heavy cloud hanging over nanotechnology.

For us at Paul Penders, safety always comes first. We strongly believe that nanotechnology for cosmetics must stop immediately and.... "get it back under the microscope" first.
